In this section of our newsletter, we often feature stories of families that have adopted through PWNL and have gone on to do very well.  Recently, I had one such parent ask me why we never feature stories of the families that struggle.  I shared with her that while I would love to do that, very few people are willing to give us permission to share those stories in our newsletter.  So, in lieu of a family story – I thought that I could share some insight as a professional that has been working in foster care and adoption for over 16 years.

Most people in the adoption and foster care field are familiar with the inspirational blockbuster film The Blind Side which is the story of Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. Well, if you thought that was a great story you have to check out the new show Family Addition.

A few weeks ago we hosted The Barker Foundations Annual Conference. We had an excellent turn out of individuals invested in all spectrums of adoption. One of my favorite workshops was held by Chauncey Strong, MSW, LGSW. Mr. Strong is the Fairfax County Department of Family Services Foster Care Supervisor, Board Member for the Foster Care Alumni of America and an adopted person.

I attended training in Delaware this past weekend regarding an organization that is promoting child sexual abuse prevention & awareness training. The training provides you with video testimonials from actual survivors of child sexual abuse and from experts who deal with sexual abuse and its prevention. Hearing about this effort made me think about this topic in relation to the children we work to place through PWNL.

“Therapy” can be considered a “bad word” when said to a child who has been in the foster care system.  Often, they feel as if they have been forced to endure years of therapeutic intervention without being able to identify any positive results.
