Entering the foster care system at just one year of age, 21 year old Noel Anaya shares his story in an NPR news segment. From his judge mispronouncing his name and stating "Everyone pronounces it differently" to Noel sharing the story of he and his five siblings being shuffled between foster homes, group homes, shelters, and incarceration; the segment highlights the cracks in a system that is supposed to protect children who are vulnerable.  His time in foster care was spent wishing for a family to call his own.

One unique aspect of adopting an older child is the fact that your child will have connections and relationships with other adults who may have acted in the role of a parent, whether it be a biological, foster, or adoptive parent. In a time of stress, it is a very real possibility that your child will utter the phrases "You're not my real mom or dad" or "I'd rather live with my real family". As a parent, this can sting, but it is important to be prepared to respond in a way that offers support and puts your child's needs before your feelings.

Maryland has officially enacted policies aimed at making the foster care system safer for foster youth who identify as LGBTQ. Many LGBTQ youth who enter the foster care system are subject to more trauma and violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. An article from The Washington Post illustrates a story of one girl who identifies as transgender being forced to stay in an all-male group home, and subsequently running away to survive on the streets because of the bullying she endured.
