When an adoptive family travels to pick up their new child in the child’s birth country, as an international adoption coordinator, I am anxious during that first week when they meet their child, and breathe easier after the week has passed if I haven’t heard from them.  Why? Because while everyone expects it to be a week of great joy and happiness, I know from my own experience it can be quite the opposite. You see, before I became an adoption professional, I was an adoptive mom.

Formed Families Forward is hosting a family fun day for all adoptive and foster families next Saturday, April 29th! Keynote Speaker, Dr. Bruce Thyer, will give a presentation on "What Really Works and Doesn't Work for Tough Kids" and families will have their choice of breakout sessions including a Q&A with Dr. Thyer and a presentation on "Cruising Through Conflict: How Kinship and Other Formed Families Can Keep the Peace". There will also be a teen breakout session, "Poetry in Motion: The Rap Connection".
