As part of its mission to provide lifelong support to all members of the adoption circle, The Barker Adoption Foundation’s Family and Post-Adoption Services Department recently expanded its monthly peer support/discussion group offerings and now facilitates six ongoing groups:

  • Adult Adoptee Discussion Group Meets on the third Thursday of each month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. This group is open to any adoptee that is over the age of 18. Topics discussed include exploring adoptive identity, relationships with adoptive families and birth families (if applicable), and feelings about search and reunion.

  • Parents of Adopted Young Adults Meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. This group is geared toward parents of young adult adoptees (18+) and focuses on issues including fostering independence and identity, encouraging positive choices, navigating evolving family dynamics,  maintaining personal boundaries, and managing substance use problems.

  • Parents of Adopted Adolescents and High School Aged Teens Meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. This group is geared toward parents of adopted youth from ages 13 to 18. Topics covered include fostering independence, coping with academic challenges, encouraging positive choices, maintaining boundaries, managing substance use problems, understanding emerging adoptive identity, and navigating relationships with birth families.

  • PRIDE After Placement  Meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This group is only open to families who are actively parenting a child through the PWNL program.  Families may begin to attend once they have begun the visitation process with their child/children.  This support group/in-service two hour training session is held monthly.  The first half of this group is an in-service training, and focuses on the review of a specific topic or skill related to older child adoption. The second half will focus on family sharing and support.

  • Adoptive Parents in Domestic Adoption Meets on the first Thursday of each month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and focuses on issues including navigating communication with birth families, learning new previously undisclosed information, talking to children about their adoption and birth relatives, and preparing children for contact and visits (if applicable).

  • Birth Parent Discussion Group Meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. This group is geared toward any parent who has ever placed a child for adoption, whether this past year or 30 years ago. Participants have found the group to be a nurturing framework to meet with peers and explore issues including grief and loss, resolution, and relationships with the adoptive family (if applicable).

For the specific dates, please visit the Barker Event Calendar.

New members are always welcome, regardless of whether they were adopted through Barker.  For more information, and to RSVP, please contact Barker’s Family and Post-Adoption Services Department at 301-664-9664 or by email at
