Parenting after adoption, parenting after infertility, growing up in an adoptive family, relinquishing a child, being adopted – are all experiences that come with joy, sadness, and other complex emotions. Exploring these emotions through writing can be a great way to capture and make sense of the thoughts and feelings that accompany the adoption experience. Barker has invited Sarah Saffian, adoption therapist, author of Ithaka: A Daughter’s Memoir of Being Found, adult adoptee, memoir teacher, and journalist - to present a day-long writing workshop at Barker. Sarah will lead a group made up of various members of the adoption constellation with short writing exercises – like writing a letter to a birth child, birth parent or adoptive parent. Sarah will help the group determine what questions they want to reflect on: the failure of a match; what it would be like to reunite with a birth relative; the connection to one’s country of origin; what life was like for your child before adoption; or what you imagine life has been like for a child you placed. Sarah will engage you in self-reflection, sharing (if you feel comfortable), discussion, and she will facilitate the opportunity to learn from your own writing and from each other about the worries, concerns, varying experiences, wisdom, and perspectives that makes up the world of adoption.
Join us for a day of writing, perspective, and community. Sunday, April 29th 9:00am-4:00 pm.
