Barker S.T.A.R.S. Workshops for Parents and Kids in Grades 3 - 5
Parents and children can feel “put on the spot and surprised” when confronted with questions and comments about adoption. Adoptive parents can sometimes feel “I wish I would have said… or I wish I wouldn’t have said….”. Parents and children want to feel ready and competent in responding to questions and comments from others about adoption. Adoptive families can often find comments and questions to be offensive or intrusive even if they know the person is just asking out of curiosity. It can be difficult when faced with these situations and for children, it can be even more challenging to be asked questions related to the differences in their families.
Spend a day hearing how “Sharing Sami”, “Talking Tessa”, and “Ready Riley” respond to comments and questions from others. They were adopted too.
This team of STARS wants to share with you the comments and questions they may get from friends or others such as: “You can’t have two moms…everybody has a mom and a dad." "Why don’t you look like your dad?" "Were you in an orphanage like Annie (the movie)?" "Where are your REAL parents?" "Did your REAL parents not want you?" "How can you not have a dad?" (for a two-mom family or single female parent)
BARKER S.T.A.R.S. will empower your child to feel competent when faced with comments and questions about adoption. Our team of STARS (Sami, Tessa, and Riley) will discuss situations that they have been in and how they and their family responded to difficult comments and questions. This workshop not only explores the difficult questions and comments that you or your child may get asked but will also explore how to integrate all that comes with “adoption” as just “one part” of what makes your family and your child who they are. BARKER S.T.A.R.S. will talk about what makes them unique and will utilize creative arts and activities to make this a fun, engaging, and empowering day for kids and families. BARKER S.T.A.R.S. Kids Workshops are facilitated by an adult adoptee and adoption-competent counselor and BARKER S.T.A.R.S. Parent Workshops that will be held at the same time are facilitated by an Adoptive Parent or Adult Adopted Person and an Adoption-Competent Therapist.
Note: Each child will choose their very own Barker STAR Animal and will be able to build a stuffable plush toy animal with all of their thoughts and feelings about adoption. This memorabilia can be taken home as a reminder of what they learned at their Barker S.T.A.R.S. Workshop.
BARKER S.T.A.R.S. Kids Workshop
In this workshop for Grades 3-5 – Sami, Tessa, and Riley will empower your child to be ready for comments and questions from others about adoption and will have an additional focus on increased self-esteem activities. Sami, Tessa, and Riley will go home with your child stuffed with memories and representations of what makes them unique and the wonderful person they are.
Kids Groups facilitated by an adult adoptee and adoption-competent counselor.
BARKER S.T.A.R.S. Parent Workshop
Hear from other adoptive families and how they approached questions and comments about their family. Our adoption expert facilitators will provide you with the tools and support to help you and your family navigate through uncomfortable moments and ways to talk to your child about these questions. Our goal, through these Parent Groups, is to help you and your family feel empowered to take control of the narrative and feel confident as you respond to friends, family members, co-workers, or strangers.
Parent Groups are facilitated by an Adoptive Parent or Adult Adopted Person and an Adoption-Competent Therapist and will be held at the same time as the BARKER S.T.A.R.S. Kids Workshop. More details to come.
