Session Description:

Adoption is a lifelong process. Many issues can arise over time for the adoptee, birth family, and adoptive parents that can create ethical dilemmas for professionals trying to preserve each party's rights as best as possible.  In this session, Sabra Starnes, who herself is an adoption professional, adoptive parent, therapist, and adult adoptee who has experienced a closed adoption, will explore the current and past laws in the United States related to accessing identifying information in closed adoptions.  Sabra will share some of the factors that professionals must consider supporting the triad to navigate the process with each member ethically and effectively. Special focus will be placed on the ethical responsibility that adoption workers have to support the adoptee through this emotional journey.
