Event Description

Session 1: “Why did you adopt a(n) Black/Latinx/Asian child?”: Explaining reasons for adopting transracially

“Why did you adopt me?” A question all adoptive parents will likely hear. Are you ready to answer this question?   What can we learn about ourselves from our desire and choice to adopt transracially? How are our desires and motivations to adopt transracially related to our relationship with our children and their self-esteem? Are some reasons for adopting transracially morally complicated?

In this session, participants will gain practice talking about their decision to adopt transracially and will think through how their reasons might impact their children and how to explain their reasoning to their child in an age appropriate manner.
