The Barker Foundation is please to announce that it is forming a new monthly discussion group for adoptive parents of adolescents and teens.
For many years Barker has maintained a monthly discussion group for adoptive parents of teenagers. The group, facilitated by Barbara Donesky, LCSW-C, has been well attended and participants have come to view it as a significant source of support for their families. As many of the group’s core members now have children who have entered early adulthood, Barker has decided to create a new group specifically to meet the needs of families with adolescents.
- The new group will begin in January and be called “Parenting Adopted Adolescents and High School-Aged Teenagers.” It will meet on the first Tuesday of every month from 7:00 - 8:30pm. The group will be facilitated by Gina Sangster, LCSW-C, a Barker Social Worker who has extensive experience working with teenagers and their parents. The first meeting will be held on January 7th, 2014.
- The original group will continue to meet, yet under a new name “Adoptive Parents of Young Adults.” It will continue to be facilitated by Barbara Donesky at 7:00pm on the second Tuesday of every month. This group will be targeted to the needs of parents with youth who are beyond high school age and will focus on issues related to young adulthood.
Both groups will meet at Barker’s Bethesda office, 7979 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD. Free parking is available in the building’s parking lot, accessed from Auburn Street behind the building. Please not that Barker's entrance is not reached through the building’s main entrance on Old Georgetown Road; Barker has a separate entrance on Glenbrook Road (exit from the far side of the parking lot).
The groups are open to all adoptive parents -regardless of whether they adopted through Barker, and new members are always welcome. If you have any questions or would like to discuss which group may be appropriate for your needs please contact Varda Makovsky, Director of Family and Post Adoption Services at 301-664-9664 or via email at vmakovsky [at] barkerfoundation.org.
